A List of Top Educational Infographics ( Slideshow )

Infographics are gaining a strong foothold in the field of education.We are witnessing a sweeping surge in infographics talking about educational issues but some of the  companies that create them are not really interested in education but rather in SEO ( Search Engine Optimization ). Anyway I will not engage you in this topic here for it is not what this post is about and . For me as long as the infographic is based on solid background data and tackles the subjects we are interested in then why not thumbing it up,  we do not care whether the person who created it wants just to draw traffic to his or her website but as long as the infographic itself contains valid and correct data then why not share it.The aim is learning and not judging people's intentions after all. I said this because  I have been engaged in such a debate about infographics in one of the  webinars I held recently and I just want to make it clear once for all.

That being said, I would like to insist on the validity and usability of the infographics I include in my blog. Before I share one here it  has to go through a filtering process including a small investigation about the creator of the infographic  and many many  other things. Anyway and without any further ado, the following are some of the popular infographics that have been making rounds online and that I have also included in Educational Technology and Mobile Learning.

Infographic on The Digital Classroom

There is a growing buzz in the educational sphere around digital textbooks. Since the launch of iBooks 2 and iBooks Author and the educational technology experts are investigating the potential of these new revolutionary tools. Google is not disassociated from the scene and it is trying to take a foothold with a huge project called Chrome books. So the question that really needs an urgent answer is : are  we in front of  a ferocious competition between Google and Apple to gain more sales via investing in education or is it really the beginning of a digital revolution in education?

Anyway I can not provide an answer yet as it is too early to judge the intentions behind these huge moves but what is really amazing is the fact that the infographic world is keeping track of these innovations and is providing us with awesome infographics too. The Digital Classroom is an example. There are quite many others that cover this issue and that I have included in previous posts here, you can check out Educational Infographics section to learn more.

The Educational Use of Mobile Phones

The world is going mobile. The new sweeping technological changes and the introduction of smart mobile devices into our life have hugely transformed the way education is delivered. Everywhere you turn you spot someone deeply sucked into his/ her mobile. I know not all users use their smart devices for educational ends  but there is a growing category of teenagers that are trying the educational potential of these appliances.

Below is an infogrpahic that provides interesting data of how students use their mobile phones to study. I am really glad to know that some students are giving the example to others of how phones can be used to perform better.

Below is a great infographic that compares the American public school system to some other countries like Canada, Great Britain, France, China and many more.Read the alarming stats that are annoying American public policy makers. You might be suprised to see that the educational system of the world's super power deteriorating but I don;t think it is only America, I think several other schools systems suck too.

Flipped Classroom A New Learning Revolution

There has been a growing buzz around a recently coined phrase " Flipped Classroom". This term starts to take root in education as more and more educators are discovering it. So what is this all about and what are its advantages in learning and teaching? ( Awesome Infographic included below )

Flipped Classroom is an inverted method of instruction where teaching and learning take place online outside of the class while  homework is done in the classroom. Advocators of this approach believe that this is the ideal method of instruction in our digital age. They basically build their judgement on the following facts :

• Flipped Classroom shifts the learning responsibility and ownership  from the teacher's hands  into the students'.
•  Students tend to perform better when they control when, where and how they learn.
• Teachers no longer dispense knowledge but rather guide and direct while students are the real active learners 
• Teachers create animated videos and interactive lessons and lectures and students access them at home in advance of class even. In this way all students can re-watch the video tutorials whenever they want.
• Classroom time can be geared towards data collection, collaboration, and application.
• Class becomes a place for students to work through problems, advance concepts, and engage in collaborative learning.
• Flipped Classroom also "allows teachers to reflect on and develop quality and engaging learning opportunities and options for internalization, creation, and application of content rather than just fluff or time filling assignments."

Flipped Classroom depends a lot on educational technology and web 2.0 tools such as podcasting and screencasting applications.

"In most Flipped Classrooms, there is an active and intentional transfer of some of the information delivery to outside of the classroom with the goal of freeing up time to make better use of the face-to-face interaction in school. When appropriate, information transfer typically takes advantage of technologies like podcasting or screencasting. This allows for more time to individualize instruction in the class time and keeps content alive for remediation, review, or other reference when needed. Learners have immediate and easy access to any topic when they need it, leaving the teacher with more opportunities to expand on higher order thinking skills and enrichment. Offloading some information transfer allows a classroom to develop that understands the need for teacher accessibility to overlap with cognitive load. That is, when students are assimilating information, creating new ideas, etc. (upper end of Bloom's Taxonomy) the teacher is present to help scaffold them through that process."

A direct and concrete example of Flipped Classroom concept is the popular Khan Academy. This website  has completely reshaped home instruction via providing more than 2800 free videos and tutorials available in 16 languages and covering a wide range of topics such as Math, Physics, Geometry, cosmology, microeconomics and many more. Flipped Classroom should not be thought of as a single stand alone instruction cycle but rather as a part of a general educational systems that overlaps with other instructional tools such as Blended Learning, Universal Design for Learning, Inquiry Learning, Reverse Learning, and Online Learning.

Can Technology Save Today's Education ? ( Infographic )

Is it true that today's youth are not really interested in schooling? " teacher I hate school " this is what  I was told by one of my  grade 12  students in a public school in Halifax just two days ago.I know this is a single case but it is just the emerging part of the iceberg. Below is an example of the American case. Read the frightening stats about test scores  and drop out rates among students. America is not alone in this for ,out of my decent expeirnece in teaching in different countries in Africa and Europe and now in Canada, I can strongly confirm the fact that several other educational systems suffer more or less  the same flaws.

" Open any newspaper and the story is the same: The American educational system is tragically failing our youth.Student test scores are dismal and drop out rates are astronomical . But many experts believe  that the burgeoning field of educational technology provides hope and with Apple's big announcement this week, they might just be right".

iPad VS Textbooks Which is Best for Education

With the start of 2012 Apple announced two major products geared towards education. The aim is to provide digital textbooks and probably replace traditional textbooks forever. iBooks ( a virtual library where users can read and download ebooks they want ) and iBooks Author ( an app that allows users to create their own textbooks ) have been making the news for a while now. The educational Technology experts have welcomed this move towards the digitisation of education but have also expressed some of their fears or let's say setbacks that would stand against the implimentation of Apple's ideas in education.

Social media websites such as Twitter and Facebook are gaining a solid foothold in the educational circles. More and more students and teachers are using  them be it for personal or professional learning purposes. One single querry in a search engine using the key words" the importance of social media in education" will generate several pages with links to blogs and websites talking about the socialisation of learning and teaching.

Be it you are for or against it. Students are using social media in their everyday life more it used to be just two years ago. It is also pretty obvious that this use is increasing with the new innovations in the field of mobile technology. It seems like the whole world is going mobile now and as you know most if not all the smart devices in the market now support WiFi and internet connection allowing users to access their social media profiles and get instant updates wherever they are.

The Digital Devide in Education

Internet has tremendously revolutionized our life to the point that we become completely dependant on its services in our everyday chores.The degree of this dependence varies from one person to the other yet its presence is ubiquitous. The question that poses itself here is does everyone have the same free access to internet? and those who already have this access do they have the same broadband?

These questions if asked from an educational perspective could even be much more insistent. Inequality to internet access among students could create a digital abyss that would definitely result in low performance.Additionally, not all schools have sufficient computers for their students and even worse there are still schools in some parts of the world that do not have one single computer in their establishment ( some in Rowanda and Ethiopia ). Edudemic has recently released a great infographic about the state of student Debt. It has pictured students as zombies because of the scary situation in which students live now.Some students finish their schools with huge amounts of debts on their shoulders, others are still paying for their diplomats even after 10 years of work now. Is this fair? Can human knowldege be restricted in terms of money ? Why governments do not do anything about it? Why would not they cover all these costs and offer free higher education to everyone or at least with cheap prices. Oh I forget it is capitalism and this is how it works. You pay You live.

 Out of all the people surveyed 76 percent believe it has become harder to afford college in the last five years. 21 percent believe that students graduate with a manageable amount of college loan debt. Read the infographic to learn more

The Impact of Sleep Deprivation on Students Brains

Here is a great infographic from Onlinecolleges. Its central theme is sleep deprivation and its effect on the lives of students. There are several interesting facts included and some are even new to me.  You can share this infographic with your students and show them how good sleeping habits would increase their classroom performance.

SOPA and PIPA for Educators ( Infographic )

SOPA and PIPA are officially tabled now. Yes a big sigh of relief , the internet was just a step away from a smothering censorship. The house of Senate in USA was about to discuss a possible enactment of the SOPA ( Stop Online Piracy Act ) and Protect Intellectual Property Act ( PIPA ) propsed by the huge media corporations such as Comcast, News Corp, Disney, Universal Music, Warner Music, Paramount Picture,.etc.The unfair monopolisation of the audio visual field by these media gurus together with their  unimaginable gains have been seriuosly threatened by the democratization Internet brought about. The masses now are digitilaly free and they have free and unlimited acess to all kinds of materials without having to pay anything and all at a single click. This has madened these media monsters and wanted to exerce some pressure by paying for some senators to try to raise the issue of piracy and all that buble. Nobody believes them anymore .

What Freshmen Need to Know about College

Beginning college can be a duanting experience, one that ca be a costly adventure adn filled with high expectation.. but is it worth the sacrifice ? It definately is. I personally consider going to college as one of the most important phase in our life especiialy if it is a successul  experience. Anyway not everyone has the chance to do so and hopefully governemnets will start thinking seriuosly about how to make graduate studies affordabel for everyone and why not even free.

How to Choose The Right College

Getting the right higher education orientation is not an easy thing . We have already had ours and some of us were lucky enough to have been properly directed towards the field of study most relevant to his/her skills but several others were misguided. As educators and educators, especially those dealing with k-12 students, we need to make sure our students are properly mentored as to what will and will not work for them once they graduate.

I am not saying that we wil be giving them sessions of higher education counsuling for this is not our job and there are people who can do this but what I am hinting at is those practical  general tips that can help students get the maximum from a prospective university course. Sexually Transmitted Diseases on The College Campus ( Infographic )

Sexually Transmitted Diseases ( STD ) are a huge risk facing our kids and students in different levels including the ones at the college level. This last category is the is  most likely to be prone to this kind of  affection. Risks of contracting SDTs are mainly increased by factors such as lack of knowledge, recklessness, irresponsible behaviours, and incorrect insight. As educators, we can do a lot in sensitizing students about these healthcare challenges and probably change their conduct and render their environment more SDTs free.

You can use Google Calendar to  store important dates and set out alerts  so that you will never skip anything you saved. Google docs lets you download and save your documents and lets you access them wherever you are with an internet connection. Google Reader  saves you the pain of remembering those sites you like frequenting and Google search brings the world's library right into your hands and the list is too  long  for me to cover in a single post . In short, can Google  really replace your mind and make you just a skeleton with a brain connected to the cloud ?
